Once again, according to SafeWork Australia statistics , the most common cause of the 70 work-related fatalities that occurred between 1 July and 31 December 2011 was being Hit by a falling object : accounting for 13 fatalities. Falls from height were ranked as the 8th major cause of fatalities with a total of 4 recorded July to December.
The good news is that overall fatalities were down from the same period in the previous financial year there were 78 work-related notified fatalities (including 10 bystanders).
In December alone there were 14 work-related notified fatalities reported – 13 male workers and 1 male bystander. Out of the 14 fatalities, 4 were categorised as being Hit by a falling object. In comparison in December 2010 17 fatalities were reported for the same period.
