I recently attended the DROPS Forum in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Over 180 representatives from the oil and gas industry attended to share experiences and knowledge about preventing dropped objects in the workplace. The key speakers targeted awareness, identification and controls as important factors in reducing dropped object related accidents and near misses which is very much an issue not only for the oil and gas industry but for every industry exposed to gravity. Dropped Object Injury and Fatality Statistics July – Dec 2011
Once again, according to SafeWork Australia statistics , the most common cause of the 70 work-related fatalities that occurred between 1 July and 31 December 2011 was being Hit by a falling object : accounting for 13 fatalities. Falls from height were ranked as the 8th major cause of fatalities with a total of 4 recorded July to December. The good news is that overall fatalities were down from the same period in the previous financial year there were 78 work-related notified fatalities (including 10 bystanders). In December alone there were 14 work-related notified fatalities reported - 13 male workers and 1 male bystander. Out of the 14 fatalities, 4 were categorised as being Hit by a falling object. Dropped Object Injury and Fatality Statistics July 2010 – June 2011
Being Hit by a Falling Object was the most common cause of work-related fatalities between 1 July 2010 and 30 June 2011 in Australia, accounting for 21 of the total 137 recorded working deaths. (source Safe Work Australia). In 08/09 being Hit by a Falling Object was the fourth leading mechanism of incident of injury. Other common causes were Falls from Height which caused 19 deaths in 2010/11. Unfortunately, we're off to a bad start for 2011/2012 statistics, with nine fatalities attributed to being Hit by a Falling Object in the latest Notified Fatalities Report released by Safe Work Australia in January.
